CCG at the Cloud to Edge Reference Architecture Industry Workshop, Brussels

·

Carstens Consulting Global participated in the Cloud to Edge Reference Architecture Industry Workshop in Brussels, where CEO David H. Carstens joined allied nations and industry representatives to address one of the defining challenges in modern defense architecture: building a secure, resilient digital backbone from strategic cloud to the tactical edge.

More than a conference, it was a working-level engagement, structured around active tables, real architectural problems, and direct conversation between practitioners from NATO member states and the private sector.

Two Critical Challenges at the Edge

Two issues dominated the working sessions and reflect the genuine complexity of this domain.

The first is that designing for the edge means designing for failure first. Architectures optimized for stable, well-connected environments break down when confronted with intermittent connectivity, autonomous node operation, and shifting classification boundaries. A cloud-to-edge continuum only functions reliably if it is built from the ground up to survive disruption, not merely to accommodate it as an edge case.

The second is that Zero Trust, in federated, multi-domain environments, is significantly harder to implement than most frameworks acknowledge. Enforcing consistent policy across nodes with varying security maturity and classification levels, under unpredictable connectivity conditions, requires architectures that do not depend on a stable perimeter at any layer. The theoretical model and the operational reality are not yet aligned.

Relevance Beyond Defense

These are not exclusively military architecture problems. The same structural vulnerabilities appear across critical infrastructure, sovereign cloud deployments, and distributed enterprise environments. The work being done in the NATO context has direct relevance to civilian sectors grappling with the same gaps.

CCG remains actively engaged in supporting allied efforts to develop the frameworks, standards, and architectures that will underpin resilient digital operations across the Euro-Atlantic space.
